In late 2019 I was approached by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to develop a new exhibition that celebrated the contribution and achievements of Tasmanian sporting women and girls. My role was to design, curate and project manage The Change Room. I worked with an advisory committee, sporting clubs and was fortunate enough to meet some extraordinary women across the state who had been involved in supporting and competing for the last 70 years.
“This is about the person, as well as the podium. We aim to capture the humour, spirit and endurance that so many sporting women have demonstrated. It is about the female coaches, commentators, managers, referees and team captains as well as the athletes.” KEastley Jan 2020.
The project explored the impact and influence of women and girls participating in mainstream and new and emerging sports and coincided with the International Cricket Council Women’s T20 World Cup.
The Change Room ran from 6th Feb - 29 March 2020 in the Bond Store and included large interpretive panels, video footage (courtesy of ABC), audio interviews and sporting memorabilia. This was an exciting exhibition to deliver, that brought to light the lesser known stories of sporting excellence and the people behind the games. This project was delivered by TMAG with support from Events Tasmania.
